What parents and students usually tell me

The most common areas of need I have encountered during the last 23 years is that students often feel overwhelmed and unable to write responses in a structured and detailed manner that would enable them to score the highest possible marks. Furthermore, I have found that some neurodivergent students may have gone undetected during their early education, but find the demands of GCSE and A levels overwhelming in terms of cognitive load and working memory. In light of this, I specifically focus on helping students see what matters most and why, so that revision becomes purposeful. Every lesson is structured so that students fully understand how to apply their knowledge to the demands of their final assessment. Sometimes parents are worried about a period of absence either due to illness or the ordinary disruption of school life, I make specific personalized, support to help students close any gaps in their knowledge, with targeted lessons and catch up.

About me

I have taught Philosophy and Religious Studies for 23 years within state and independent schools. Currently, I am the Head of Philosophy and Religious Studies, and a Director of Studies at a small private school in London, where I have taught students aged 14 to 19 years old for the last fifteen years. My pedagogical approach centers on teaching students how to think critically — I believe that students should understand that knowledge is always about application rather than assimilation itself.

I read Theology at King's College London and trained there as a teacher. I hold a Master's in Theology from Heythrop College and a Master's in Philosophy from Birkbeck College. I have been an examiner for AQA and Edexcel Religious Studies, I have published articles in RS Review, and I have advised Polity Press on books for the OCR Religious Studies course. I have also published a monograph with Verlag Dr Muller on the theology of Karl Barth.

Questions parents ask

How much does it cost?

£80 per hour, whether we meet in person or online. The same rate for GCSE and A-level.

What's included?

Tuition, marking, and access to resources — including a private online study space built for their course, where they can revise and ask questions of the material between sessions. (It runs on Google's NotebookLM.)

Do you teach online or in person?

Both. Online is on Zoom. For in-person sessions I travel to the student, anywhere in Zones 1 and 2.

How often should we meet?

I recommend two hours a week. There is also the option of more intensive study during the holidays.

Can we start mid-year?

Yes. I take on students at any point in the year.
